Healthrhythms
Group drumming is not about inspiring successful drumming –
it’s about inspiring success living.
Almost everyone would enjoy making music. Haven’t we all said that we’d like to be able to play an instrument? There’s a good reason for that. Making music and having fun doing it is good for you.
HeartWorks offers a group drumming program called HealthRhythms®, a scientifically tested approach to having fun and improving your health. It works for children and adults, requires no prior drumming experience, and has been demonstrated to provide specific health benefit. Research also shows that businesses whose employees participate in the program also enjoy the economic benefits of increased employee satisfaction and lower turnover, which translates into higher productivity.
Dr. Barry Bittman, a respected neurologist, and Christine Stevens, an internationally known music therapist, have led the development of this process and the research efforts that have demonstrated its effectiveness. Here are some of the research results:
Group drumming by medically normal subjects resulted in the stimulation of natural killer cell activity (killer cells are specialized white blood cells of our innate immune system that seek out and destroy cancer cells and virally-infected cells).
Group drumming by first year nursing students resulted in reduction of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.
A related study led by Bittman and Stevens also showed that an affordable recreational music program encourages communication, reduces elements of burnout and improves mood states among employees, while reducing turnover.
Bittman and Stevens are working with people of all ages – from children to nursing home residents – and from all walks of life. John has trained directly with them. Copies of the study information is available upon request.
At HeartWorks, we will work with employers, health care providers, schools and colleges to develop a fun and affordable program that will reduce stress in the workplace and classroom. We can show employers the research on how the program can reduce turnover and improve the bottom line.
The HeartWorks Stress Management Center has facilities for hosting groups of various sizes, including our special drumming kiva – a great facility for small groups
